A group of over sixty women, known as the Alfonsinas, has transformed their passion for cycling into a movement of sisterhood in Cerdanya, organizing regular outings and expanding their activities to other sports and social gatherings.

The Alfonsinas collective, now boasting over sixty members, began almost spontaneously in Cerdanya. These women share a passion for cycling that extends beyond the sport itself, becoming a means to disconnect, enjoy, and foster companionship. The initiative, which promotes 'sororidad' —a concept of mutual support and sisterhood—, has grown exponentially since its inception.
The group's origin dates back to a pilates studio in Puigcerdà, where six women decided to create a WhatsApp group to organize their first bike ride to Meranges on September 23, 2023. Although they had previously cycled individually, from that moment on, they began riding together regularly. Word-of-mouth and friendship networks have rapidly expanded the group, now including residents from Barcelona and other areas with second homes in Cerdanya, as well as women from Alt Urgell.

The name 'Alfonsinas' emerged as a tribute to Alfonsina Strada, who was the first and only woman to participate in the Giro d'Italia at the beginning of the last century, challenging sexism in professional competitions of the time.

The collective's name pays homage to Alfonsina Strada, the pioneering cyclist who, in the early 20th century, was the first and only woman to compete in the Giro d'Italia, challenging the gender norms of the era. This choice symbolizes the Alfonsinas' desire to pedal towards a social normality where the bicycle, once considered 'inappropriate' for women, serves as a vehicle for empowerment and freedom.
The group is characterized by its heterogeneity and openness, welcoming women of various ages and professions. The only requirement is knowing how to ride a bicycle, without needing an advanced skill level, as groups are formed based on competence during outings, and mutual waiting is practiced. Sunday gatherings typically begin with breakfast in Puigcerdà, followed by the day's cycling route, and often an aperitif before returning home.
With two and a half years of history, the Alfonsinas now have personalized gear and have expanded their activities beyond cycling, including ski trips, hikes, and dinners. They also participate in events such as the International Cyclotourist Tour of Menorca, in which they took part last year. This year, they plan to participate for the first time as a group in the Marxa de les 3 Nacions on June 6 and will undertake a two-day route through Berguedà next weekend.
