Around fifty people gathered in Heroes' Square in Puigcerdà to honor the residents who defended the town from Carlist sieges on April 10 and 11, 1873, with significant student participation.

The annual event commemorates the bravery of Puigcerdà's inhabitants against the Carlist troops led by Francesc Savalls. Despite the attackers' numerical superiority, with 1,200 men, the people of Puigcerdà resisted firmly, determined to preserve the ideals of liberty arriving from Europe.

"It is important to reclaim this day so as not to make the same mistakes and to highlight the good deeds of a past that must guide us. The fact that this year we have insisted that this legacy reaches schools more strongly is very important because if we don't know where we are or why we are doing things, we will hardly be able to continue growing as citizens of a town that once defended this emblematic place, the town of Puigcerdà. It is very important that this memory is not lost."

Joan Manel Serra · Mayor of Puigcerdà
For the first time, the commemoration of April 10 included the presence of young students, specifically 4th-year ESO students from Vedruna de Puigcerdà school, underscoring the town council's interest in transmitting this historical legacy to new generations.
Representatives from the Town Council, the Cerdanya Regional Council, and entities such as Amics de Cerdanya and the Institut d'Estudis Ceretans laid the traditional floral offering at the Heroes' monolith. Among those present, Maria Lluch, a 98-year-old resident of Puigcerdà, displayed the medal of honor her great-grandfather received for his participation in the town's defense.

"I have the medal that my great-grandfather won, who also defended Puigcerdà, in the Town Hall square which was then a wall. They gave them this medal which has reached me and I keep it as a treasure."

The local government has announced its intention to expand the celebration of these historical events in future editions, thus strengthening the community's connection with its past.
