Staff at International Paper factories in Valls and Montblanc have announced an indefinite strike starting February 24 to protest against the planned closure of both facilities.

The main goal of the industrial action is to pressure the multinational corporation into selling the assets instead of shutting them down, which would impact 200 jobs. The CCOO union stated that workers are fully united as they prepare for the first formal negotiations with the company management.

"We are aware that there are three buyers very interested in purchasing both factories."

Despite interest from investors, which was noted by Industry Minister Jordi Hereu, the company has reportedly been reluctant to sell to avoid future competition. Local authorities, including the Alt Camp Mayors' Council, are expected to pass a motion supporting the workers this Thursday.
