The Conca de Barberà region witnessed a remarkable astronomical event on Wednesday, August 12th. Residents and visitors gathered in open and elevated areas across the region, equipped with protective glasses, to observe the solar eclipse as the Moon progressively covered the Sun.
Six municipalities within the region fell within the path of totality: Vilanova de Prades, Vallclara, Vimbodí i Poblet, l’Espluga de Francolí, Montblanc, and Vilaverd. In these locations, the Moon completely obscured the solar disk for a few seconds, plunging the landscape into sudden darkness during the late afternoon. The duration of totality varied, from approximately 28 seconds in Montblanc to nearly 44 seconds in Vilanova de Prades.
In Montblanc, areas such as Foradot, Pont Vell, the Vidal parking lot, and the Pla de Santa Bàrbara were recommended spots due to their westward visibility. The phenomenon was also observed in the hamlets of Rojals and Prenafeta, with some temporary access restrictions implemented in Rojals to prevent excessive vehicle concentration.
Vilanova de Prades stood out as a particularly attractive location due to its favorable position within the path of totality and the extended duration of the phenomenon. In l’Espluga de Francolí, the viewpoint on Bellavista street was one of the recommended spots.
The eclipse was also experienced from other locations, including Barberà de la Conca, where the castle served as a privileged vantage point, and Vimbodí i Poblet, which hosted a special event at the Poblet Monastery combining astronomical observation, education, and gastronomy. The prevailing scene across the region was one of people stopped, looking west with anticipation.
This unique moment, not to be repeated until 2180, was shared by the Conca de Barberà and other parts of southern Catalonia.
