The rains on September 16 caused the collapse of the main collector transporting wastewater from Canyelles to the Sitges treatment plant. This infrastructure, managed by the Mancomunidad, has suffered successive damage, preventing its full restoration. Consequently, wastewater has surfaced in the Vilafranca stream, causing unpleasant odors.
To minimize inconvenience, accumulated water is being pumped from the stream, particularly in the area of Plaça de les Amèriques and along Nicaragua and Equador streets. Stream cleaning work has also been carried out.
The collapsed collector is located near the entrance to Vora Sitges, between two wells on either side of the C-15Z road. A temporary containment dam has been built, and an earth barrier will be established to prevent wastewater flow. Access for specialized machinery to clear the pipe, blocked by flood debris, is being prepared.
Additionally, the City Council is working on repairing the sewer well at the access bridge to the Les Amèriques and Can Roca urbanizations, which was damaged two weeks ago. These tasks, coordinated with AGBAR, are expected to begin shortly once water flow stabilizes.
Given the forecast of new rainfall for the weekend of October 17-18, the Mancomunidad Penedès-Garraf has planned a control and reinforcement operation to mitigate the impact on residents and expedite infrastructure repairs.
