Nestled between the sea and the mountains, Canyelles is a small village that, despite its proximity to Vilanova i la Geltrú, the capital of Garraf, offers a distinct experience. This town in Alt Penedès is renowned for its extensive hiking routes, its imposing castle, and its medieval church, elements that make it a point of interest for nature and history enthusiasts.
Historically, Canyelles has been a town with a strong winemaking tradition, bordering Olèrdola to the north, Vilanova and Sant Pere de Ribes to the south, and Castellet i la Gornal to the west. Although small agricultural exploitations still exist, the local economy has shifted towards tourism, services, and second homes, becoming the main economic driver of the municipality.
The old town of Canyelles invites visitors on a journey through narrow, cobbled streets leading to the Castle of Canyelles. Documented in the 15th century, this fortification was crucial for protecting the maritime route between Vilafranca del Penedès and Olèrdola. After belonging to several families, it was acquired and restored by Miguel Salinas y Bofill in 1982. Currently, it is owned by Dr. Marisa López-Teijón, who purchased and donated it to the town in 2025 with the intention of preserving it and transforming it into a community space.
A local legend recounts that, in late 1478, King John II of Aragon spent a night in Canyelles castle, seeking refuge from the cold during a hunting trip, before being transferred to Vilafranca and finally dying in Barcelona between January 19 and 20, 1479.
Canyelles' warm Mediterranean climate, with mild winters and hot summers, makes it ideal for outdoor activities. From the old town, several routes lead into the Garraf forests, such as the Pla del Bosc, featuring a rural farmhouse among vineyards, and the Serra del Montgròs, which was an important Iberian settlement in the 3rd century BC.
The municipality is also known for its events, such as the Fira de Santa Llúcia or the Fira del Motor. However, the Festa Major de Santa Magdalena, celebrated in July, is considered by many the best time to visit, featuring competitions, dances, concerts, 'correfocs', parades, and vermouths with electronic music.
