Vilanova i la Geltrú is preparing to celebrate International Dance Day on April 25, 2026, with a day full of movement, culture, and free activities for all ages.

Although the official international date is April 29, the capital of Garraf has decided to move the programming to the weekend to encourage public participation. This decision aims to make the celebration an accessible and inclusive event for all residents and visitors.

International Dance Day has been celebrated worldwide since 1982, when it was established by the International Theatre Institute with the support of UNESCO. April 29 was chosen in honor of the birth of Jean-Georges Noverre, considered the creator of modern ballet.

The main objective of this day is to promote dance as a universal language, bring this art closer to society, and foster cultural diversity and artistic expression. Currently, the celebration includes shows, workshops, and performances around the world.
The planned program for Vilanova i la Geltrú, although subject to adjustments, will include activities throughout the day. In the morning, there will be dance workshops for all ages, open classes of modern, urban, and classical dance, as well as family and children's activities. These will take place in central squares and cultural facilities of the city.
At midday and in the afternoon, the streets of Vilanova i la Geltrú will be filled with performances by local dance schools and exhibitions of various styles, such as contemporary dance, urban (hip-hop, street dance), and traditional or folk dance. There will also be artistic interventions in different parts of the city, spread across the main squares, central streets, and cultural spaces.
The day will culminate in the late afternoon and evening with final performances that will include group choreographies and more elaborate shows, with a collective closing featuring the participation of several schools. A festive and participatory atmosphere is guaranteed, making it an ideal opportunity for both participants and spectators.
One of the most notable elements of the event is the involvement of local dance schools, cultural associations, and amateur and professional groups. This turns the day into an authentic showcase of the city's talent and an opportunity to discover its rich artistic scene. The event is designed for all audiences, from children with dynamic workshops to adults with open classes and shows, as well as enthusiasts who wish to participate and visitors looking for a free cultural atmosphere.
