The Recuperem Santa Quitèria Neighborhood Association in Vilanova i la Geltrú has reported new waste dumping inside the quarry premises, forcing the Catalan Waste Agency to launch a new investigation.

The complaint, filed on November 17, comes after the Catalan Waste Agency (ARC) fined the company Gestora de Runes, SL (GRV), which operates the plant, 100,000 euros earlier this year for similar infractions. The ARC then imposed precautionary measures to limit activity until the dumped materials were removed.

"We saw waste entering a deposit where it should not have gone, but the residents cannot be acting as police. This is a job for the City Council or the Waste Agency."

The conflict also centers on the quarry's closure timeline. The Vilanova i la Geltrú City Council is negotiating an agreement with the company to reduce the closure and restoration period from 37.5 years (scheduled for 2062) to just 10 years (around 2035). However, residents demand immediate closure, considering it a matter of quality of life for the Santa Quitèria neighborhood.
The Mayor, Roser Colomé, confirmed that the Waste Agency has officially recorded the new neighborhood complaint. Furthermore, she assured that negotiations to accelerate the quarry closure agreement will resume during December.

"During the month of December we will move forward with the negotiations for the quarry closure agreement to be able to advance it."
