Vila's appointment received significant support, securing 39 out of 58 votes, surpassing the two-thirds qualified majority required in the first round. This decision follows the announcement by outgoing president, Lluís Llach, not to seek re-election due to health reasons, which prevent him from maintaining his previous level of dedication.
Despite stepping down as president, Llach will remain within the Assemblea's leadership, taking on the role of vice-president. Additionally, Ariadna Heinz has been elected secretary, and Blanca Currià will serve as treasurer, completing the organization's new leadership team.
“"Vila's appointment occurred in “a climate of broad consensus."
According to the pro-independence entity, the new leadership aligns with the desire to
“"culminate the internal renewal process initiated over the last two years."
The primary objective is to solidify the ANC as a fundamental tool for mobilizing the independence movement.
Josep Vila, a retired professor with extensive experience in the education system, has been involved with the ANC since its founding nearly fifteen years ago. He has held various positions, including coordinating the Girona territorial assembly between 2022 and 2024, and coordinating the Political Advocacy Commission during the last term.
“"build a social majority in favor of independence."
In his initial statements, Vila emphasized the importance of
“"continuing to work to reposition independence in public debate."
To achieve this, he proposes re-establishing local roots with active assemblies capable of mobilization, while also seeking a more agile organization adapted to the current context. The Assemblea's core principles, such as the defense of the Catalan language and the denunciation of fiscal, cultural, social, and national exploitation, will remain steadfast.
