The Carretera dels Àngels, connecting Girona and Quart, has solidified its cycling profile, with two out of three journeys made by bicycle during 2025, according to data from the Diputació de Girona.

This route, which provides access to the Santuari dels Àngels, has registered an average of 250 daily bicycle journeys over the past two years, representing 64% of the total traffic. In contrast, cars account for 141 daily journeys, making up 36% of the total. These figures translate to approximately 183,100 bicycle journeys and 103,000 car journeys during the analyzed period.
The upward trend is notable. In 2023, bicycles accounted for 54% of journeys, while motorized vehicles were 46%. By 2024, the proportion of bicycles rose to 63%, with 247 daily uses. In 2025, this figure increased to 65%, with 254 daily bicycles, totaling 92,710 bicycle journeys and 50,005 car journeys annually.
The measurement system, a pioneer in Spain, uses sensors installed by the Diputació de Girona at two points on the road, one for each direction of travel. These counters, which differentiate between bicycles and motorized vehicles, operate autonomously and are located between the Bicentury factory and the Santuari dels Àngels, within the municipality of Girona.
This cycling predominance is mainly concentrated during daylight hours and mornings, reinforcing the image of the Carretera dels Àngels as a key route for cyclists in the area. The cycling community has repeatedly requested the closure of the road to motorized traffic on certain days of the year, a decision that would fall to Trànsit de la Generalitat.
Another road with a significant cycling presence is the GI-532 road, known as the Carretera de les Serres. Although cars are predominant, with 166 daily journeys (66%), bicycles account for a third of the traffic, with an average of 86 daily uses (34%) between 2024 and 2025. This road, featuring ascents and descents, connects Sant Martí de Llémena with Bonmatí.
