In a message posted on the social network X, Salellas acknowledged that the decision to maintain the indefinite stoppage, which began last midnight, will have a “direct effect” on cleaning services. The mayor stated that the intention to affect Girona citizens and the Temps de Flors event is obvious.
The mayor recalled that the cleaning service has already suffered numerous incidents in recent years and apologized to citizens for the inconveniences that will be generated. Although the service is outsourced, and the negotiation of the agreement is “a matter between the company and the committee”, the Girona City Council has worked intensively to improve the contract and has convened a dozen bilateral meetings.
“"We have fulfilled what the parties asked of us, we have opened the door to service improvements, which would be good news for everyone, and we have moved pieces to facilitate understanding. Girona residents do not understand nor deserve this situation."
A crisis committee was convened this morning to address the situation. Despite municipal efforts, the situation is “different from what was expected”, and the mayor expressed his disappointment and empathy with the residents. Therefore, he assured that they will continue working to “facilitate an understanding” that allows for improved working conditions for staff and, above all, to defend the interests of residents, who “deserve to have a quality cleaning and waste collection service”.
