The narrow victory (71-74) at the Olímpic de Badalona against Joventut, despite a late scare, marked the seventh win of the season for Bàsquet Girona. This triumph seals a historic clean sweep of victories in the ACB Catalan derbies, having previously overcome Barça, Baxi Manresa, and Hiopos Lleida.
This successful run in proximity matches comes at a sweet moment for the team, which boasts an 8-2 record since Moncho Fernández took over from Fotis Katsikaris on the bench. The Galician coach began his tenure with a victory in Lleida on January 4, 2025, followed by the major achievement of defeating Barça at Fontajau three days later.
The Girona team defeated Barça at Fontajau (96-78) when they were still coached by Joan Peñarroya, and achieved similar results against Hiopos Lleida (103-86) and Baxi Manresa (95-97) at Nou Congost. The only team affiliated with the Catalan Basketball Federation that broke this dynamic was Morabanc Andorra, which won a wild game 115-113 in the third round.
The next proximity challenges for Bàsquet Girona will be at the Palau Blaugrana on February 8 and, a week later, at Barris Nord, where they will seek to maintain their excellent form and consolidate their league position.
