The Government will declare next Tuesday in the Consell Executiu the general interest of the future Clínic-Universitat de Barcelona (UB) Health Campus, and also the Girona Health Region Health Campus. The executive's objective is to give “absolute political and institutional priority” to these two strategic projects, aiming to transform Catalonia's hospital, teaching, and research system. The Minister of the Presidency, Albert Dalmau, highlighted that they are “two projects for the country” developed with broad institutional consensus. “Our goal is to remove bureaucratic hurdles so these projects can be accelerated and become a reality as soon as possible,” he added.
This declaration will allow, in the energy sector, for the projects to access “priority processing” for grid connection and capacity permits. Specifically for the Clínic, it will enable the land on Avinguda Diagonal currently designated for sports facilities to be used for the new Campus. The Consell Executiu will also ratify on Tuesday the deseignation of the UB land on Diagonal, allowing it to cease being public domain property linked to university services and to be subsequently acquired by the Generalitat for 135.25 million euros.
Regarding the new Clínic, last Monday saw the publication of the prior announcement for the international project competition that will shape the campus, with a call for entries planned for September. The first phase, involving team presentations and technical accreditation, will run from September to November; followed by a preliminary elimination stage with 10 teams until April 2027, and a second stage with 5 teams and proposals by December 2027. The winner will be decided in the first quarter of 2028. The future campus will include the new hospital, the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences of the UB, and additional healthcare, university, scientific, and research facilities, consolidating healthcare, teaching, and research within a 300,000 square meter space.
Concerning the new Girona Health Region Health Campus, last Friday, Infraestructures.cat definitively awarded the architectural project to the UTE Pinearq, SLP & Brullet de Lluna i associats SLP & PEGI Engineering, SL. The complex, to be built on land straddling Girona and Salt, will include the new Doctor Josep Trueta University Hospital, as well as new teaching, research, and innovation spaces promoted by the University of Girona, alongside a hub for healthcare companies.
