The Generalitat will soon approve the declaration of general interest for the new Clínic Hospital-University of Barcelona Health Campus and the Girona Health Region Campus. This measure aims to grant maximum political and institutional priority to these two strategic projects, expected to transform the hospital, teaching, and research system in Catalonia.
According to the Minister of the Presidency, Albert Dalmau, the goal is to minimize bureaucratic hurdles and accelerate urban planning and energy-related procedures to bring these infrastructures to fruition as soon as possible. Dalmau indicated that the two projects follow different timelines, with the Girona campus in a more advanced stage of transformation.
These initiatives are intended to boost healthcare, training, and biomedical innovation, solidifying Catalonia as a European leader in health and life sciences. The declaration of general interest will facilitate priority access to grid connection permits and capacity, a crucial aspect for large healthcare and research facilities requiring high energy consumption.
Additionally, the Executive Council will ratify the deseignation of the University of Barcelona's land on Avinguda Diagonal, allowing the Generalitat to acquire it for the future Clínic campus. This complex, which will include the new hospital, the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, and other facilities, will span 300,000 m² and aims to position Barcelona as a world-class biomedical hub.
A prior announcement for an international design competition for the campus's architectural and engineering projects has also been published. The process, starting in September, includes several evaluation phases for teams and proposals, with a final decision expected in the first quarter of 2028 and a contract of approximately 134 million euros for the winner.
The new Clínic hospital complex anticipates a significant increase in operating rooms, interventional suites, hospitalization beds, and emergency bays, with an estimated global investment of 1.7 billion euros and a planned operational start by 2035.
Regarding the Girona Health Campus, the Generalitat has already awarded the architectural project to the UTE PINEARQ, SLP & Brullet de Luna y asociados y SLP & PEGI Engineering, SL. This team will have two years to draft the project for the complex, which will include the new Doctor Josep Trueta University Hospital, teaching, research, innovation spaces, and a hub for healthcare companies.
The projected investment for the Girona campus is 740 million euros, covering an area of 175,000 m². The new hospital complex will significantly enhance healthcare capacity, increasing from 674 to a maximum of 855 beds and from 84 to 162 emergency bays.
