Girona City Council has extended the agreement for the treatment of the organic fraction of municipal waste until July 31, 2027, ensuring service management at the Solius plant.

This decision allows the council to guarantee an outlet for organic waste while the construction of the future Gironès Waste Treatment Center, located in Campdorà, is completed. The agreement, which has been extended for another year, maintains the collaboration with the Consortium for the Conditioning and Management of the Solius Waste Treatment Complex.
The investment planned for this period is estimated at approximately 737,800 euros, although the final figure will depend on the volume of tons sent and the percentage of impurities detected in the collection. According to the established rates, the cost per ton varies significantly depending on the purity of the material, ranging between 189 and 217 euros per ton.
The expenditure schedule sets a budget of 307,416 euros for the second half of 2026 and 430,383 euros for the first seven months of 2027. The maximum limit of organic waste that can be sent to the Can Duran plant has been set at 3,400 tons per year.
This agreement acts as a temporary solution, as the launch of the new center in Campdorà, funded by the Generalitat with 54.9 million euros, is not expected until 2029. Once the extension ends, the council will need to define a new management model to cover the remaining period until the new facilities open.
