The initiative, which involves the public company l'Energètica, aims to utilize the space to generate renewable energy while providing shelter from rain and sun in a highly transited area, especially between transport stations.
“"It is a project that helps address two issues that were central when we started the municipal government in 2023."
The project will unfold in three phases. The first, scheduled for this year, will involve a feasibility study and the presentation of three alternative proposals to be agreed upon with the council and residents. The executive project is expected to be drafted by 2027, with construction starting in 2028 and a possible completion in the same year or early 2029. The estimated cost of the project is 2 million euros, and the installation will cover approximately 1,000 square meters.
A 1 MW installation could generate about 1,500 MWh annually, equivalent to the consumption of approximately 500 homes. Thanks to the recent expansion of the proximity energy radius to five kilometers, the production can supply numerous public facilities in Girona and its surroundings.
“"Cities are not self-sufficient, but they must be as self-sufficient as they can."
This new proposal also seeks to unblock an urban and administrative issue that the city has been facing for years. The original Central Park canopy project suffered two failed tenders and a contract termination that was annulled by an administrative court, which ruled that the delays were not attributable to the awarded company. The ruling also obliged the council to cover the procedural costs, up to a maximum of 3,000 euros.
