The Madrid-born coach, who arrived at the Girona dugout in the summer of 2021, will not continue next season. The club expressed its gratitude via a social media statement for "the dedication, commitment, and professionalism" shown during his tenure.
With a record of 221 official matches managed, Míchel has established himself as a key figure in the club's sporting growth. He led the team to promotion to La Liga in 2021-22 and subsequently to a historic third-place finish in the 2023-24 season, securing qualification for the Champions League for the first time.
Míchel's arrival marked a turning point. After a challenging initial season, the team rallied, culminating in promotion. Upon returning to La Liga, Girona competed successfully, and in the 2023-24 season, they captivated Europe with an offensive and attractive style of play, thanks to successful signings and key player loans.
Despite subsequent challenges, including the team's depletion of talent and injuries, Míchel maintained his commitment, learning Catalan and using it in public appearances, a gesture highly valued by the Girona community and earning him the popular chant of "Míchel català" from the fans.
The sporting direction, led by Quique Cárcel, has been ratified to continue at the helm of the project, which will now seek a new coach to lead the return to La Liga, following a relegation marked by inconsistency.
The coach from Vallecas's future may lead him to Ajax Amsterdam, which reportedly is interested in appointing him as their new manager.
