The niche module in section 10 of the Sant Joan de les Abadesses cemetery will be demolished due to collapse risk. The works, which have already begun, also include accessibility and safety improvements to the facility.

The risk of collapse detected years ago has led to the demolition of the niche module in section 10 of the Sant Joan de les Abadesses cemetery. The works started this week and are expected to last for two months.
Over the last decade, the deceased interred there have already been moved to other areas of the cemetery. Only one case remained, whose descendants could not be traced. This module never functioned normally.
In parallel, the roof of another module, section 9, will be renovated due to the poor condition of the slab and supporting elements.
The project has a budget of 56,092 euros plus taxes, of which nearly 50,000 euros come from a subsidy from the Girona Provincial Council. In addition to the demolition and roof renovation, the works include renewing the main entrance pavement, replacing sidewalks in the original area, creating a new accessible entrance to the chapel with a ramp and railing, and installing a toilet in a currently unused room.
As an energy efficiency measure, new lighting points powered by photovoltaic panels and lithium batteries will be installed.
The Sant Joan de les Abadesses cemetery, dating back to 1885, is a historic facility cataloged within the General Urban Planning Plan.
