The Fundació Oncolliga Girona announced this Wednesday during the presentation of the Oncotrail that it will allocate €100,000 to the Idibgi to fund a research project against central nervous system cancers, the most lethal in children.

These funds, raised through Oncotrail donations, will be distributed in two contributions of €50,000 corresponding to the 2025 and 2026 editions. The goal is to develop a new anti-tumor therapy for central nervous system (CNS) cancers, which affect pediatric, adolescent, and young adult patients.

The project's objective is to develop and test a new anti-tumor treatment in the preclinical phase for central nervous system cancers, the most lethal in young patients.

The project, titled Un nou horitzó en el tractament dels càncers del sistema nerviós central (SNC), is led by researcher Jordi Frigola, head of the Chromosomal Replication group at Idibgi. In addition to this research investment, €239,841 of the total raised (€430,093) has been allocated to comfort and diagnostic improvements in hospitals across the Girona province.
Among the benefited centers, the Dr. Josep Trueta Hospital received €48,109 to acquire a fractional CO2 laser, while ICO Girona received €53,950 for a digital ultrasound machine, virtual reality licenses, and the renovation of oncology ward spaces. Funds were also received by the Santa Caterina Hospital (€18,530), Palamós Hospital (€45,601), Figueres Hospital (€16,927), Olot Hospital (€9,761), Campdevànol Hospital (€20,000), and Blanes Hospital (€25,137).
The Fundació Oncolliga Girona itself received €129,027 to ensure the continuity of its care services, such as psychological support and home physiotherapy. Furthermore, a new grant call of €10,000 has been created for projects that improve comprehensive patient care, initially focusing on fertility preservation in young women with breast cancer.
The thirteenth edition of the Oncotrail, the 100 km solidarity challenge through the Costa Brava and Gavarres, will take place on October 3 and 4, starting and finishing in Palafrugell. This year, the organization will limit places to 400 teams, 370 of which will be allocated by draw. Since its first edition in 2013, the event has raised over three million euros.
