The seventh edition of the Green Flags campaign has kicked off this summer with the participation of over 700 hospitality establishments across the Girona region. This initiative aims to acknowledge the correct management of glass containers and assess the environmental commitment of the restaurant sector, particularly during the peak tourist season.
Five municipalities from Girona are part of this year's edition: Blanes, Lloret de Mar, Roses, Sant Feliu de Guíxols, and Torroella de Montgrí. These towns will compete with around twenty other Catalan towns for one of the two green flags available in Catalonia.
Across Catalonia, the campaign will involve nearly 2,000 hospitality establishments and about twenty coastal municipalities. The organization will focus on the proper collection of glass during the summer, a period that sees increased tourism, consumption, and consequently, higher waste production.
In the previous edition, the Maresme municipalities of Calella and Canet de Mar were awarded the two green flags. Furthermore, the new edition introduces an additional prize for the municipalities with the highest scores in each autonomous community, who will receive an environmental awareness day led by educators on the benefits of recycling and waste separation.
The organizing entity will also recognize three hospitality establishments in Catalonia for their outstanding environmental management. The assessment will consider aspects such as waste management, water and energy consumption, and the purchase of sustainable products. Last year, an establishment in Torroella de Montgrí, Les Corones, shared this award with the restaurant Catalina in Gavà, highlighting their measures to reduce environmental impact.
