Lack of lighting, poor maintenance, and incivility transform the park into an unsafe area at night, according to the neighborhood report.

A report commissioned by the Massana Neighborhood Association in Salt has highlighted the "nighttime degradation" of Massana Park, primarily attributed to insufficient lighting and poor maintenance.

The study, prepared by the consultancy Asecrim following Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) criteria, emphasizes a clear duality between the park's daytime and nighttime use. While the park serves as a gathering place for families and children during the day, the night reveals a different reality.

"Due to lack of space maintenance, because it is a poorly lit space, and because people who engage in activities not intended for the park gather there, it is a space that is gradually degrading."

The report's methodology included direct observations at various times, exploratory safety walks with neighborhood participation to gather perceptions and complaints, and workshops with local children to understand their expectations for the space. The findings point to low natural nighttime surveillance, insufficient lighting, a sense of abandonment and dirtiness, as well as the need to reinforce the park's identity.
Among the key proposals in the study are a comprehensive improvement of lighting in accesses and pathways, structural pruning to eliminate blind spots, renovation and relocation of the children's play area, construction of a sports court, and enhanced maintenance and signage. The goal is to present these conclusions to the Salt City Council for future actions, although municipal sources have indicated that they have not yet received the study.
