Tree felling begins at Les Pedreres Gardens in Girona due to fall risk

The work started after last week's storm caused five trees to fall and forced the temporary closure of the park.

Girona City Council operators began felling several trees at Les Pedreres Gardens this Tuesday, as the specimens posed an imminent risk of falling following the recent heavy rainfall episode.

Several workers started the tasks to cut down trees located on the slope area of the park, which were heavily inclined and had shallow roots. These specimens were identified following the storm and heavy rains last week, which had already caused five trees to fall in the same area of Les Pedreres Gardens.

"of uncertainty and insecurity"

Sergi Font · Deputy Mayor and Councillor for Ecological Transition and Urban Area
The council decided to close access to the gardens last week because the wet ground generated a feeling of insecurity, explained Deputy Mayor and Councillor for Ecological Transition and Urban Area, Sergi Font. The councillor confirmed that the at-risk trees were located exclusively in the slope area, near the old Mercè bastion, while those on the esplanade posed no danger.
This intervention is part of a broader project that the City Council plans to tender in the coming weeks. The plan includes replacing 48 sick or poorly grown trees and adding 22 new specimens of different species to enhance the park's health and safety in Girona.
