For over 25 years, Girona's Truffaut Cinema has been successfully managed by the Col·lectiu de Crítics, a non-profit organization. This venue is the only cinema remaining in the city center and has established itself as a cultural benchmark, increasing its audience to a record 48,000 spectators last year.
The growth of the Truffaut has been boosted by the opening of a second screen and a stable program that includes original version films, thematic cycles, and collaborations with festivals and local entities, strengthening its connection with Girona's cultural fabric.
However, the continuity of this management is at risk due to a public tender called by the Girona City Council. The proposal from the Col·lectiu de Crítics has fallen behind that of a private company from Cambrils, Tarragona, although the final award has not yet been officially announced.
The tender, which closed on March 5, evaluated two proposals. In the technical assessment, considering criteria such as programming, language promotion, and cultural engagement, the Col·lectiu de Crítics gained a three-point advantage. Nevertheless, the economic offer tipped the scales in favor of the private company by just over two points.
If the award is confirmed, the change in management could occur in the coming weeks, as the current contract with the collective ends on April 18. This situation could lead to a temporary closure of the cinema until the handover is effective, a process that might extend for weeks.
“"Nothing can be taken for granted until the award is official and signed. Technical reports must be completed and potentially abnormally low offers reviewed before definitively resolving the tender."
The Mayor of Girona, Lluc Salellas, has highlighted the significant cultural contribution of the Col·lectiu de Crítics to the city for over two decades. Members of the collective, including Paco Vilallonga, Àngel Quintana, Imma Merino, Guillem Terribas, and Jordi Camps, are awaiting a meeting with the mayor to address the situation, expressing their dissatisfaction with the process that has placed them second after dedicating over 25 years to a non-profit project, reinvesting profits in improving the facility.
