Winter, traditionally one of the driest seasons in Catalonia, has shown a clear precipitation anomaly during December and January. These events have been described as “extraordinary” to justify issues such as the chaos on the Rodalies commuter rail network.
The total accumulated rainfall over these two months is notable in several locations. In Girona, nearly 450 liters per square meter were recorded, while Cabanes (Alt Empordà) exceeded 400 and Granollers surpassed 300. These figures rank among the wettest or second wettest for these months since 1950.
Despite the historical records for the season, data shows that over the last 75 years, Catalonia has experienced two-month periods with much higher rainfall accumulations.
Comparison with historical data shows that current records are not exceptional. For instance, in Girona, between September and October 1965, almost 750 liters per square meter accumulated. Very high winter records are also found, such as the 512 liters per square meter between January and February 1982, also in Girona.
