A fire that broke out early this Tuesday morning in an abandoned industrial warehouse in Girona, the former Simon factory, has left five people injured due to smoke inhalation, none requiring hospitalization.

The incident occurred around 3:30 AM at the site on Barcelona street, where approximately twenty homeless individuals currently live. Emergency services, including the Municipal Police and the Medical Emergency System (SEM), responded to the scene to assist those affected.
Although five individuals were treated for smoke inhalation, none required hospital admission. Hours later, shortly before 7:00 AM, a hotspot reignited, prompting a renewed intervention by emergency teams. The Municipal Police evacuated a total of fifteen people from the warehouse, none of whom sustained injuries.
This industrial warehouse is the same one that the Girona City Council had agreed to evict and repossess in its last plenary session. This action is a preliminary step to transfer ownership of the property to the Generalitat de Catalunya, with the aim of constructing the future public Ermessenda institute there.

"The council was working at a 'social level' to find an alternative for the twenty homeless people living there."
