The Grup Impuls per Girona (GIG), which includes the Chamber of Commerce, Foeg, Pimec, and the Fòrum Carlemany, stated that constant interruptions to the rail service are the direct consequence of decades of lack of investment and maintenance in the Catalan network, which has reached critical levels.
Business leaders recall that the state administration has recognized the historical deficit. Between 2010 and 2023, only approximately half of the budgeted investment for railways in Catalonia was executed, leaving more than 5 billion euros pending.
“"We are tired of excuses and delays. We need real investments and a dignified future for everyone."
The lack of investment has real effects on productivity and competitiveness, hindering logistics and especially affecting SMEs and sectors linked to commerce and mobility. Furthermore, the GIG warns that this issue is only the tip of the iceberg of generalized disinvestment, with an accumulated gap of up to 40 billion euros in recent years.
To reverse this situation, the group demands a clear, transparent, and binding investment plan, complete with an executive calendar and fair funding, to guarantee reliable infrastructure and efficient public services for Girona and Catalonia.
