Catalonia gained 111,895 inhabitants in 2024, although this growth is almost entirely due to immigration. For the seventh consecutive year, the country's natural balance was negative, resulting in 13,722 fewer people, derived from 53,802 births and 67,524 deaths recorded.
The Gironès established itself as the significant exception, registering a positive balance of 330 people. This figure contrasts sharply with the regions showing the most negative balance, such as the Barcelonès (-4,130), the Baix Llobregat (-1,370), and the Maresme (-1,253).
Catalonia's population reached 8.12 million inhabitants as of January 1, 2025, driven by a net migration balance of 129,030 people from abroad.
This demographic dynamic in Gironès is explained by its age structure. It is the region with the highest percentage of young population (0-15 years) in Catalonia, at 16.9%, well above the Catalan average (14.4%). Furthermore, it has a lower proportion of the population aged 65 or over (16.4%).
Within the region, the municipalities of Girona and Salt stood out among cities with over 10,000 inhabitants for having the highest natural growth, with 198 and 169 people respectively, reinforcing the positive trend of the territory.
