The recent Linguistic Usage Survey by the Generalitat, published with 2023 data, shows a decline in the habitual use of Catalan of over 20 points in Alt Pirineu and the Girona regions compared to 2003 figures.

The comparison of data collected by the Generalitat between 2003 and 2023 reveals that in Alt Pirineu i Aran, the habitual use of Catalan has fallen from 71.7% to just 51.1%, a loss of 20.6 percentage points. This sharp decline is evident across all of Catalonia, particularly affecting social spheres such as conversations among friends, neighbors, or colleagues.

Across Catalonia as a whole, the average habitual use of Catalan has plummeted from 46% in 2003 to the current 32.6%, a loss of nearly one-third.

The regions experiencing the most severe setbacks are Ponent (Plana de Lleida), which lost 25.4 points (dropping from 76.5% to 51.1%), and the Girona regions, which suffered an almost identical drop of 25.3 points, settling at 45%. This places Girona below the halfway mark for habitual Catalan speakers, at levels similar to Camp de Tarragona (37.9%).
The most critical situation is registered in the Barcelona Metropolitan Area (AMB), where the habitual use of Catalan has fallen from 41.5% to 24.7% (-16.8 points), now being the region with the lowest percentage. In the social sphere, use among friends has dropped 15 points (from 61% to 46%), and exclusive use in conversations with friends is now only 15%.
