Following the recent unified demonstration in Barcelona, teachers from the Girona region are called to a new strike this Tuesday, the first of two planned at the territorial level within this wave of mobilizations. The second strike day is scheduled for June 1.
The protest in Girona, taking place during Temps de Flors, is themed “For Temps de Flors, we stand firm!”. The demonstration will start at noon from Correus and head towards the Territorial Education Services. The convening unions, including USTEC-STEs, Professors de Secundària, La Intersindical, and CGT, have urged participants to bring decorated yellow or black flowers to "plant" them in front of the Generalitat headquarters.
The day of mobilization will begin at eight in the morning with slow marches organized by the Coordinator of Educational Assemblies of the province of Girona. These marches will converge in Girona from various towns such as Figueres, Verges, la Bisbal d'Empordà, Corçà, Sant Feliu de Guíxols, Llagostera, Sils, Salt, Sarrià de Ter, Olot, and Banyoles.
At ten in the morning, a breakfast has been organized in Plaça Catalunya, followed by a class at half past ten. This activity aims to be an informative space for teachers and citizens, with the goal of explaining the actions taken, future mobilizations, and encouraging continued participation, according to the Coordinator.
This call is part of a month of strikes and mobilizations that unions have planned between May and June under the slogan “Without dignified conditions, we do not finish the course”. The main demands include the recovery of purchasing power, reduction of student-teacher ratios, increased staffing, more resources for inclusive education, reduction of bureaucracy, and a review of curricula with teacher participation. The conveners also express their rejection of the agreement signed by the Department of Education with CCOO and UGT, considering it "insufficient".
The strike day will coincide with the sectoral table meeting, where the Minister of Education, Esther Niubó, will meet with union representatives starting at a quarter to ten in the morning to seek avenues for agreement.
During the strike, educational centers must guarantee minimum services. These include the presence of one member of the management team per center, one teacher for every three units or classrooms in Infant, Primary, and Secondary education, 50% of the staff in special education centers, and one-third of the staff in nurseries. Minimum services are also planned for dining, reception, extracurricular activities, and attention to students with special educational needs.
