MICFootball 2026 Expands to 45 Girona Municipalities

The 24th edition of the international youth football tournament kicks off in Figueres with the opening match between FC Barcelona and AS Roma.

The 24th edition of MICFootball, the prestigious international youth football tournament, officially opens this Wednesday in Figueres and will extend across 45 municipalities in the Girona region, a record number in its history.

The event, known as MIC-Mediterranean International Cup, commences with the traditional opening ceremony at the Vilatenim stadium. The first match will feature the U16 cadet teams of FC Barcelona and AS Roma, with over 7,000 spectators expected in the stands, marking the start of the sporting Holy Week.
As customary, the inauguration will include a flag parade with the participation of 482 teams and 42 nationalities represented in the tournament. Figueres, the capital of Alt Empordà, will also host the finals for the U13, U15, and U16 categories on Sunday. The remaining finals will be played in Palamós over the weekend, concluding a total of 1,200 matches over five days of competition.
This edition, running from today until Sunday, stands out for its geographical expansion, with matches scheduled in 45 Girona municipalities, the highest number in over two decades. Arbúcies and Flaçà are the main new additions this year, allowing the organization to utilize over 60 fields. Participating municipalities include Bàscara, Begur, Breda, Caldes de Malavella, Calonge i Sant Antoni, Cassà de la Selva, Celrà, Castell-Platja d'Aro, Castelló d'Empúries-Empuriabrava, Fornells de la Selva, Girona, Hostalric, Jafre, L'Escala, La Bisbal d'Empordà, La Jonquera, Llagostera, Llançà, Lloret de Mar, Maçanet de la Selva, Monells, Mont-Ras, Palafrugell, Palau-Saverdera, Pals, Quart, Riells i Viabrea, Roses, Salt, Sant Feliu de Guíxols, Sant Gregori, Sant Pere Pescador, Santa Coloma de Farners, Santa Cristina d'Aro, Sils, Torroella de Montgrí-L'Estartit, Tossa de Mar, Vidreres, Vilablareix, and Vilamalla.
With 8,500 young footballers aged between 12 and 19 participating, the tournament will reach the milestone of 100,000 participants since its inception. Among the players who have competed in MICFootball are world-renowned figures such as Leo Messi, Neymar, Lamine Yamal, Pedri, and Cubarsí. The first edition was held in 2001 in the Canary Islands, and since the following year, the tournament has been established in the Girona region.
