The show, which is part of the El Generador cycle, uses lights, visual effects, smells, and even flavors to envelop the work of the American composer John Cage. This scenic and immersive proposal seeks a contemporary approach to a figure considered “uncomfortable” for classical music.
“"Cage introduced key concepts for the history of 20th-century music, such as active listening and the idea that any sound, even those not considered music, can be incorporated into the musical discourse."
The Cage Reload project is the second in a trilogy that uses a concert for piano and orchestra as its starting point, modifying the original material with contemporary techniques such as electronic music and visuals. This version is based on Cage's concerto for prepared piano and chamber orchestra, the composer being the inventor of this instrument altered with rubber and wood pieces.
Three ensembles participate: Morphosis Ensemble, Neopercusion (an international reference in contemporary percussion), and the Ensemble Flaixback, with Thomas Pénanguer handling the visuals. The prepared pianist will be the Frenchman Jean-Pierre Dupuy, supported by Laia Armengol and Joan Bagés, all under the direction of Àlex Sansó.
As a prelude to the premiere, students from the Conservatori de Girona staged an artistic action open to the public in the Plaça Independència, performing two iconic pieces by John Cage: 4’33’’ and Imaginari Landscape nº4.
