The Girona City Council warned residents this Wednesday about a new scam attempt in the city, where an individual impersonated the council to urgently demand payment of the IBI or garbage collection fee.

The alert, disseminated through social media, details that the scammer requests the payment of municipal taxes under the threat of applying a surcharge if the payment is not made immediately.

"demands the payment of the IBI or the garbage fee with the warning that otherwise a surcharge will have to be paid"

Girona City Council · Official Statement
This is not an isolated incident, as the City Council had previously reported similar situations in October 2024, and subsequently in January and April 2025. In a previous case, in February 2025, a resident ended up paying 500 euros after receiving a fraudulent phone call.
The council reminds residents that any communication regarding pending payments is “always communicated in writing and by certified mail, and never solely by phone”. Furthermore, official payments are made using a letter with a barcode, with bank transfer being an “exceptional” option.
