Catalan athlete Said Mechaal, originally from Palamós, broke the Spanish 10K record in Valencia on Sunday, January 11, subsequently criticizing the lack of institutional support received nationally.

The 10K València Ibercaja by Kiprun race held on Sunday, January 11, was the setting where Said Mechaal achieved the historic time of 27:21, lowering the previous national record held by Ilias Fifa since 2025 by twenty seconds.

"I am very grateful to the people who have believed in me throughout all these years, which has basically been the United States, who is the one who has supported me the most."

The new national record holder openly criticized the abandonment he felt in Spain, stating that he was denied access to the High Performance Center in Madrid when he was without any help.
Mechaal extended his gratitude to his current club, Vistasol, for supporting him before moving to the United States, where he completed much of his athletic and academic training while competing in the NCAA.
