The 2,431 used car sales counted in the Girona regions during January represent almost 700 fewer transactions than those recorded a year earlier. This figure is also below the records of January 2024, when 2,916 used cars were sold, implying a 16.6% decrease compared to that month.
This negative trend in the used vehicle sector adds to the poor results for new passenger cars. The province of Girona registered 1,018 new car registrations in January, 3.1% less than the previous year, according to joint data from the employers' associations Anfac, Faconauto, and Ganvam.
The used market must face a significant qualitative improvement.
The drop in sales is generalized. Across Catalonia, sales of used passenger cars and SUVs fell by 5.9% (22,037 units), and throughout Spain the decrease was 8.8%, reaching 157,776 units. At the national level, 2.2 used vehicles were sold for every new vehicle.
Analyzing the sales channels, only imports (with an 8% increase) and operations involving vehicles from rental companies (RAC), which rose by 10.5%, closed January on the rise. This boost led to an 8% increase in sales of used vehicles less than one year old, reaching 17,521 units.
Despite the momentum of nearly new cars, the bulk of operations is concentrated in models over fifteen years old. These vehicles, despite falling 10.7% compared to January 2025, accounted for 40.5% of total sales. The average age of used vehicles sold in Spain in January was 11 years, exceeding 15 years in transactions between private individuals.
