The Mataró University Hospital has become a leader in Catalonia by implementing a bariatric surgery model that allows patients to return home on the very same day of the procedure.

This innovative care system has already been tested by 32 patients with severe obesity over the last 18 months. Data shows that none of the participants required readmission, and the vast majority highly valued recovering in their own environment.
The program uses laparoscopic techniques, such as gastric bypass, which are minimally invasive. Patients receive specialized medical and nursing follow-up at home during the first 48 hours, a critical period for monitoring recovery.
Eligibility criteria include being between 18 and 65 years old, being clinically stable, and living within an hour of Mataró. Patients must also have someone to accompany them at home during the initial two days post-surgery.
