Mataró records zero fines after three months of Low Emission Zone

Local authorities attribute the lack of sanctions to the existing pedestrian culture in the city center.

The Mataró City Council has confirmed that no fines have been issued during the first three months of the Low Emission Zone (ZBE), which launched on December 9, 2025.

The ZBE restricts access for the most polluting vehicles to the historic center. Although the sanctioning regime was active from day one, automatic camera controls have not registered any violations in this 0.2 km² area.
Officials believe the success is due to the area already being a well-established pedestrian zone. Most vehicles currently entering the center already carry the required DGT environmental badge.
A second phase is planned for 2028, which will expand the restricted area to the city's main ring roads and the N-II highway, affecting approximately 37,500 residents.
