The management of the R1 line in Maresme faces a decisive moment due to rising sea levels and the urgent need to modernize its infrastructure.

Coastal vulnerability to storms and a sea-level rise of 4 mm per year threaten the current tracks. While human intervention and ports have altered the dynamics of local streams from Tordera southward, the debate over moving the line inland remains open.
The idea of elevating the tracks has resurfaced, an option previously rejected by Mataró City Council forty years ago. At that time, technicians warned of structural difficulties for such heavy transport. This solution seems unlikely given historical precedents.
In the short term, the focus is on reinforcing defenses. The high breakwater installed between Riera d'Argentona and the port of Mataró has proven effective against recent storms, potentially buying time to study more ambitious long-term alternatives.
