The Alcanar Town Council will execute the 2.56 million euro renaturalization project for the Barranc de Sant Jaume in Les Cases d'Alcanar to ensure safety and resilience against future water surges.

The project, with a total cost of 2.56 million euros, includes the creation of a new open-air ravine, the construction of a bridge, and the adaptation of a public space at the estuary in Les Cases d'Alcanar. These actions aim to solve the current channeling pathologies, evidenced by the floods of recent years, and advocate for an integrated design based on sustainable drainage criteria.

"The works will consist of making the head of the ravine as wide as possible to return the hydraulic space to the water and eliminate all architectural barriers that influence the water's exit."

Marc Chavalera · Mayor of Alcanar
Mayor Marc Chavalera confirmed that the works do not affect any homes, but mainly the square that hinders the water's exit. Regarding funding, the Diputació de Tarragona contributes 450,000 euros and the Catalan Water Agency (ACA) contributes one million euros.

"We met with the Town Council to see how we could help, and in this sense, it was agreed that we would take charge of the project."

Noemí Llauradó · President of the Diputació de Tarragona
Despite the contributions, the governing team of Alcanar still needs to find approximately one million euros more to cover the total cost, as they consider the works "a priority" for the safety of the residents. Chavalera stressed the need to face climate change and carry out more prevention actions given the recurrence of torrential rains.
