Civil Protection activates and deactivates INUNCAT alert in Montsià due to intense rainfall

The agency was able to clearly forecast the storm in Terres de l'Ebre, unlike the previous day when warnings were delayed in Maresme and Barcelonès.

Protecció Civil temporarily activated the INUNCAT plan alert this Tuesday in the Montsià region, Terres de l'Ebre, after Meteocat detected rainfall reaching 20 liters/m² in thirty minutes.

The alert was triggered by the increased intensity of rain observed by the Servei Meteorològic de Catalunya (Meteocat), especially in the municipality of Alcanar. Citizens were asked to avoid unnecessary travel and stay away from rivers, streams, and ravines.

"The lack of certainty regarding the intensity of the storms that spread across Maresme, Vallesos, and Barcelonès delayed the activation of warnings throughout the day."

Imma Solé · Operational Deputy Director of Civil Protection
The Operational Deputy Director of Protecció Civil, Imma Solé, explained that the speed with which the storm acted the previous day made it impossible to issue effective warning messages. For an alert to be effective, the forecast must have a determined duration to allow citizens to be notified.
Hours after activation, Protecció Civil deactivated the INUNCAT plan alert in southern Catalonia. However, the Generalitat agency noted that the pre-alert status remains in place until Thursday morning as a precautionary measure.
