Tarragona Provincial Council Invests in Greenways Maintenance and Promotion

The provincial body will allocate over 143,000 euros over four years for the conservation and tourist promotion of the Val de Zafán and Carrilet de la Cava routes.

The Tarragona Provincial Council has announced an investment of 143,261.58 euros over the next four years for the maintenance and tourist promotion of the Val de Zafán and Carrilet de la Cava Greenways, aiming to ensure their conservation and visibility.

This initiative is established through a proposed agreement presented by the president of the Provincial Council to the municipalities of Amposta, Tortosa, Roquetes, and La Ràpita, as well as to the councils of Terra Alta and Baix Ebre, which are the owning or leasing entities of the sections through which this tourist itinerary runs.
The agreement stipulates that local and regional entities will jointly contribute an additional 64,834.32 euros for maintenance. Furthermore, the Tarragona Provincial Council will be delegated the tasks of ordinary and extraordinary maintenance, including mowing, vegetation pruning, ditch cleaning, waste collection, surface repair, and the replacement of vertical and horizontal signage.
It will also be responsible for maintaining safety elements such as railings and fences, replacing lighting and electrical systems, maintaining slopes, and repairing damage caused by extreme weather phenomena. Tourist promotion actions will be coordinated with local entities to enhance the appeal of these routes.
The Provincial Council's involvement in maintaining over 100 kilometers of greenways and promoting them for tourism was already discussed at a meeting last November with municipal and regional representatives. Recently, on April 18, a new 27-kilometer section between Roquetes and La Ràpita, on the Val de Zafán Greenway, was inaugurated with the participation of over 400 hikers and cyclists.
The Val de Zafán Greenway, which reuses the route of an old railway line, is considered an emblem of sustainable tourism in the Terres de l'Ebre, a territory declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. This infrastructure aims to attract tourists who respect the natural environment, heritage, and local gastronomy, contributing to the deseasonalization of the tourist season, especially during spring and autumn.
