From July 9 to 12, Les Cases d'Alcanar will host the fifth edition of 'Les Cases: Dones i Mar', an event dedicated to celebrating the role of women in the maritime world.
From July 9 to 12, Les Cases d'Alcanar will once again focus on the fundamental role of women linked to the maritime world with the celebration of the fifth edition of Les Cases: Dones i Mar. This initiative has become a key event for preserving memory, recognizing the legacy of net menders, and valuing the municipality's maritime cultural heritage.
This year's program combines cultural, educational, and participatory activities centered on maritime tradition and the role of women who, for generations, have sustained the life and economy of the town. The central event will be L'art de remendar (The Art of Mending), a live demonstration that highlights a traditional craft essential to Les Cases' identity and the fishing sector, forming part of the municipality's intangible heritage.
One of the notable novelties of this edition is the inauguration of the sculpture Les Cases: Dones i Mar. The artwork, shaped like a chair – an iconic element for the net menders and a symbol of the event – will honor all women connected to the maritime world and become a new identifying feature and attraction for the town.

"Reaching the fifth edition demonstrates the consolidation of a project born to give visibility to the women of the sea, and which today is an essential event to recognize their contribution to our history and identity. This year's novelties allow us to continue growing the event, preserving the memory of the net menders and facilitating the transmission of their knowledge to new generations."
With the aim of transmitting knowledge, the workshop Aprèn a remendar (Learn to Mend) has been created, taking place before the main event. This initiative stems from the net menders' desire to share their traditional craft with future generations and interested individuals, contributing to the preservation of historical knowledge and a meaningful artisanal practice.

"Les Cases: Dones i Mar is an event that values the human and cultural heritage of our municipality and helps us explain who we are and where we come from. The inauguration of the new sculpture represents a permanent recognition of all the women who have been a key part of our maritime town's history."
The participation of new entities and collectives enriches the program, reinforcing the event's community-oriented nature. The involvement of local associative fabric expands the activities and further consolidates the gathering as a space for meeting, recognition, and dissemination of maritime culture.
