The main objective of the works, which have an execution period of eight months, is to improve the port infrastructure to reduce the “internal agitation” caused by strong waves. This agitation directly affects moored vessels and often forces the local fleet to seek refuge in other ports.
The technical solution, which includes the extension of the shelter dike and the creation of an internal anti-reflective breakwater, stems from studies carried out by the University of A Coruña. This institution analyzed the port's behavior using a scale model after Storm Gloria, defining the necessity of this improvement.
The port of Les Cases d’Alcanar is particularly vulnerable because it is the only one on the Catalan coast with its mouth oriented towards the northeast. This orientation makes it highly susceptible to easterly storms, which generate problems for both fishing and recreational nautical activities.
Currently, fourteen professional vessels operate there (three trawlers, seven small arts, one longline, and three auxiliary), in addition to having capacity for one hundred recreational boats between 6 and 18 meters long. The company Marina Cambrils has managed the nautical facilities since last year, under a fifteen-year concession.
