This weekend, the new 27-kilometer segment of the Val de Zafán Greenway, linking the towns of Roquetes and La Ràpita, was opened to the public. The inaugural day saw 360 participants, including cyclists and pedestrians, traverse this extension of the route for the first time.
The event was organized with simultaneous departures from various points, including Roquetes, Vinallop, Amposta, and La Ràpita, to facilitate access and allow attendees to explore different sections of the itinerary. The final meeting point and institutional ceremony took place at the Torre de la Carrova, located in the municipality of Amposta.
This expansion of the Greenway, which reuses the old railway line, strengthens its position as a key infrastructure for sustainable mobility and active tourism in the Terres de l'Ebre. The day was marked by its festive and participatory nature, transforming the new section into an outdoor gathering space.
The project, promoted by the Diputació de Tarragona, had a budget of 6.3 million euros. Of this, 5 million were funded by the European Next Generation Recovery Funds, within the framework of the “Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan” and the call for Sustainable Tourism Plans in Destinations (PSTD).
This initiative aims to boost the region's cycle tourism offerings, especially for the family segment. To this end, the Diputació's Tourism Board has developed a digital route planner that includes all adjacent cycling routes and associated tourist services, allowing users to customize their itineraries. Additionally, audiovisual resources have been created to promote the route in various markets.
