This infrastructure, which will act as a small reservoir, has as its main objective to mitigate the effects of the overflow of the Pelós ravine, a recurring problem affecting the town during episodes of intense rainfall. The Minister of Territory, Housing and Ecological Transition, Sílvia Paneque, has highlighted the importance of these ponds for flood prevention.
“"It is very important to have lamination ponds, which act as small reservoirs that can hold a lot of water and are fundamental in flood prevention."
The project foresees an approximate investment of 445,000 euros, of which 95% will be financed by the Catalan Water Agency. The initiative has been accelerated following the severe damages recorded during the DANA of 2025, when the overflow of the ravine caused floods in several homes in the urban core.
To make the construction possible, the Santa Bàrbara City Council has reclassified a plot of 6,430 square meters located west of the municipality, between the Galera road and the Mas de Barberans road. The pond will have dimensions of 100 meters long by 60 meters wide and a depth of 3.75 meters, and will be integrated into the landscape with the conservation of existing trees and the planting of new vegetation.
This action is part of a broader strategy by the Government to reduce the risk of floods in the Terres de l'Ebre. The plan, approved in October 2025 after Storm Alice, contemplates a global investment of 37.5 million euros for 25 structural actions over the next five years.
