The Castell del Remei in Penelles (Noguera) inaugurated a photographic route on Tuesday featuring previously unseen snapshots captured by photographer Francesc Boix in 1938 while following Republican troops in Ponent.

The route consists of five information panels and two monoliths displaying the passage of the Spanish Civil War through the area, including portraits of soldiers, gas maneuvers, and leisure activities such as dances and swimming competitions. The images were captured by Boix, known as the photographer of Mauthausen.

"I remember the explosion, my brother and I were sleeping next to a wall that fell on us and split my head open."

Jordi Roiger · Explosion Survivor
The presentation of the itinerary coincided with the 87th anniversary of the gunpowder magazine explosion that occurred in the early hours of January 20, 1939, in the estate's warehouses, shortly after being occupied by the Francoist army. This tragic event resulted in 87 fatalities, 81 of whom were military personnel and 6 civilians.
One of the survivors, 95-year-old Jordi Roiger, attended the event and shared his testimony. The president of the Castell del Remei Foundation, Mireia González, emphasized that the panels help "preserve" the historical memory of the site.
The itinerary, with content prepared by expert Pol Galitó, is an initiative of the Memorial Democràtic de Catalunya and is managed by the Penelles City Council. In addition to Castell del Remei, the route also runs through Vilanova i Santa Maria de Meià, Linyola, Baldomar, and Vilanova de la Barca.
