Water management authorities opened the gates of the Sant Llorenç de Montgai and La Mitjana reservoirs near Lleida this Wednesday to quadruple the Segre river flow and prevent future uncontrolled flooding.

The operation, carried out due to intense rainfall, caused the flow of the Segre river near Lleida to surge, multiplying by four since Sunday. The flow increased from 24 cubic meters per second on February 1 to 84 cubic meters per second on Wednesday morning.
This figure represents a flow five times higher than the average recorded in the Segre in Lleida throughout 2025. This management is necessary to create space in the reservoirs given the record snow accumulation in the river headwaters, particularly the Noguera Pallaresa.

Hydraulic administrations must maximize flow management to prevent uncontrolled flooding in the coming weeks.

It is estimated that at least 50% of the accumulated snow will melt when temperatures rise, and this water will flow directly into rivers and tributaries. Therefore, both the Confederació Hidrogràfica de l'Ebre (CHE) and the Agència Catalana de l'Aigua (ACA) are coordinating precautionary maneuvers for Catalonia's internal basins.
