This increase has been continuous over the last 20 years, with Noguera leading the percentage growth in Catalonia with 17.4%. Other regions with notable increases include Segarra (+11%) and Alta Ribagorça (+9.2%). In contrast, Alt Urgell (+0.5%), Cerdanya (+2.1%), and Garrigues (+2.9%) show more moderate rises.
Statistics also reveal that Noguera (78.2%) and Pallars Jussà (74.7%) are among the Catalan regions with the highest proportion of residents abroad who were born outside Spain. Provincially, nearly 63% of Lleida residents living abroad reside in their country of birth. Over the last decade, the total number of Lleida residents abroad has grown by 53%.
Regarding countries of residence, Andorra remains the primary destination, with 5,904 Lleida residents at the beginning of 2026, although its increase over ten years has been only 2.3%. Argentina follows with 5,009 residents, a 38% increase from a decade ago. Other countries such as France (4,858), the United Kingdom (1,282), Germany (1,137), and the USA (913) have seen the number of Lleida residents double or almost triple in the same period.
By age group, Pallars Sobirà stands out with the highest percentage of residents abroad aged 65 or older (42.4%), while Solsonès records the highest proportion of young people aged 0 to 14 (25.6%).
At the Catalan level, the total number of residents abroad was 427,423 people as of January 1, 2026, a 5.1% increase from the previous year. Those born in Catalonia residing abroad have increased by 1.7%, while those born abroad have grown by 7.1%. The majority of these residents had their last municipal registration in a municipality in the Barcelonès region.
