This initiative marks a milestone in Lleida, as it is the first time interventions with the DaVinci robot have been performed on a real biological model, allowing surgeons to refine their skills before applying them to humans. The training, which has attracted students from across Spain, has covered various surgical specialties.
“"The use of the robot with controls makes it as if the surgeon is operating inside the patient's body."
Dr. Pelegrí emphasized that the course is aimed at surgeons seeking excellence in the use of the most advanced technology in the sector. He highlighted the difficulty of organizing such courses due to the high cost of the DaVinci robot and its limitation to exclusive use with animals once it has been used. Previously, access to this training for unaccredited surgeons was very challenging, and many interested individuals had to travel to centers outside Spain, such as Brussels, as options in Catalonia were only available in Barcelona.
The DaVinci robot, described as a "slave robot," precisely replicates the surgeon's manual movements via remote controls. This technology provides 20 to 30 times better image quality, with 3D visualization and magnification, and allows the surgical instruments to perform movements exceeding 360 degrees. This results in improved dissection quality, faster patient recovery, less bleeding, and higher quality reconstructive surgery.
From a professional perspective, Dr. Manuel Gutiérrez, a student from Seville, praised the comfort offered by the robot. The surgeon operates while seated at a console, which reduces physical fatigue and exhaustion during long interventions, thereby improving concentration and performance.
The training week at CREBA not only focused on Urology, with doctors Jaume Pelegrí and David Garcia, but also included sessions on abdominal wall surgery with Dr. Villalobos. Similar courses with the DaVinci robot and live pigs are planned for the end of the year, with a waiting list already open. The objective is to consolidate Lleida as an international reference center for the training of elite surgeons.
