Floodgates opened at Mitjana and Sant Llorenç de Montgai to prevent flooding

The preventive measure is taken due to exceptional snow accumulation in the Segre and Noguera Pallaresa basins, 40% above average.

The Ebro Hydrographic Confederation (CHE) opened the floodgates of the Mitjana dam and the Sant Llorenç de Montgai reservoir yesterday to manage the expected increase in flow due to snowmelt in the Segre and Noguera Pallaresa basins.

The main goal of this measure is to create space for more water intake and prevent uncontrolled flooding in the coming days, especially given the recent rainfall. The Segre and Noguera Pallaresa basins are experiencing an “exceptional year” of snow accumulation.
According to CHE data, the snow reserve could be nearly 40% higher than the average recorded over the last five years. This large volume of snow will melt as temperatures rise, contributing a significant amount of water to the rivers and tributaries.
The opening of the floodgates, particularly at Mitjana, has already had a notable impact on the flow of the Segre river. The flow multiplied almost fourfold in just three days, rising from 24 cubic meters per second on Sunday, February 1, to 83.3 cubic meters per second on the morning of February 5, 2026.
