Five young people between the ages of 14 and 18 died on Monday night during a fire in a storage room of an apartment block in Manlleu, Osona.

The incident began around 9:10 PM in a space located on the rooftop of a building on Montseny Street. Investigators confirmed the site was not a residence but a regular social gathering spot for local youth. The victims, identified as Mohamed Z., Mustafa B., Amin A., Mohamed M., and Adam B., were students at the Antoni Pous and del Ter high schools.
The Mossos d'Esquadra police force is investigating an accidental explosion as the primary cause. Survivors reported that the group was using laughing gas (nitrous oxide) canisters to inflate balloons. It is believed that gas leaked into the confined space and ignited when a lighter was used, triggering the fatal blast.

"I am shocked by the death of five people in Manlleu. My condolences to their families and friends."

A total of 13 fire crews responded to the scene, finding the building already evacuated. In addition to the fatalities, four other individuals sustained minor injuries. Interior Minister Núria Parlon and Mayor Arnau Rovira visited the site to support the emergency teams and the victims' families.
